AYC Chinese Umbrella Painting successfully held

On April 25, the Asian Youth Center (AYC) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University held a Chinese Umbrella Painting activity for Chinese and international students. It was hosted by international student Zara.

At the beginning of the activity, the host introduced the theme and the form of this activity to the Chinese and foreign students. The theme was to further understanding of Chinese culture and to strengthen bilateral communication and comprehension between Chinese and foreign cultures, further propelling the spreading of Chinese traditions. Moreover, Zara introduced the Chinese umbrella, a traditional Han handicraft, describing its origin, development, popularization and utilization, as well as related emotions and cultural significance. She also gave the basic process and some instructions on painting Chinese umbrellas.

During the activity, everyone gave full play to their imagination and expertise, and decorated umbrellas with various patterns, smart colors and unique characteristics. Some depicted plums, orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums, some delivered abstract art, and some painted lively cartoons; they all conveyed rich and profound meanings such as environmental protection. Meanwhile, a poem recitation competition and a sharing of painting experiences also took place. The activities combined education with entertainment and were carried out amidst laughter and joy all the way through.

At last, exhibition and selection of the most popular works occurred. Three works finally stood out and their creators were awarded with exquisite gifts.

With a bevy of stunning works, the Chinese Umbrella Painting came to a successful end. This event not only deepened communications between Chinese and international students, but also enhanced their friendship with each other and helped everyone to deepen their grasp of traditional Chinese culture. It also improved everyone's aesthetic concept, a valuable benefit.
