ECNU PhD program admission guide for international tudents

Duration: 4 years

Beginning: Early September

Application Period: June 15, 2021 (for Scholarship application deadline please refer to the Scholarship Section)

Eligibility

1. Non-Chinese citizen with a valid foreign passport.

2. PhD program applicants should have a Master's degree or an equivalent degree to a Master's degree (or above) in China.

3. For Chinese-taught programs: HSK Level 5 over 210

For English-taught programs, effective English Language Test Certificate or official proof of taking English-taught programs (details refer to the Language Proficiency Certificate) is required.

Native English speakers do not need to submit the English Certificate.

Documents required

1. ECNU International Students Application Form

Please log in to the online application system http://lxs.ecnu.edu.cn/application.php to fill in the application form and print it out. 

2. PhD program applicants should submit both their Master's and Bachelor's degree certificates.

* Scanned original documents. If documents are not in Chinese or English, a notarized and translated version in Chinese or English is required.

* Applicants who will not graduate before the application deadline shall provide the expected graduation certificate and the estimated graduation time should be earlier than August 31, 2021. The original graduation certificate and diploma should be submitted for registration.

3. Official academic transcript

PhD program applicants should submit academic transcripts of both their graduate and undergraduate studies.

*Original or notarized copy documents. If documents are not in Chinese or English, a notarized and translated version in Chinese or in English is required.

4. Language proficiency certificate

① For Chinese-taught programs: effective (within 2 years) HSK certificate ( HSK Level 5 over 210 or HSK Level 6 over 180).

② For English taught program: English Language Test Certificate or official proof of taking English-taught programs.

a) English language test 

* If taking TOEFL exam, you can submit the result to ECNU directly through the exam system by selecting Institution Code: C304. 

b) Proof of taking English-taught program 

- Bachelor or Master's Degree is taught in English and test language is English as well.
- Official proof, with official institution letterhead, should be issued by the university, for example by the registration office or graduate school, as opposed to by the university department or supervisors.

Native English speakers do not need to submit the English certificate.

* Applicants without any related English proficiency certificate should take the English language test as soon as possible. 

5. Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors. 

Written in Chinese or English.

The issue date of the recommendation letter should be later than September 1, 2020.

Recommendation letter MUST include: the position, the title, working place, contact telephone, email and signature of the recommender

6. A study or research plan

Words: no less than 1,500 words

Language: Written in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs or English for English-taught programs.

Content: Including, but not limited to, personal study or work experience, academic research outcome, research plan of Master's program, personal goal after graduation.

7. Catalogue and abstract of published papers, or other documents that prove academic ability (not compulsory ); the abstract of your Master's degree thesis instead of the full text.

8. Photocopy of passport (include personal information page and Chinese visa pages if you have been in China)

9. Effective (within 6 months) health certificate 

Physical examination report must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form, and provide the detailed blood test report. Incomplete forms or forms without the applicants' photograph, a sealed photograph of the applicant, the official stamp of the hospital, or signature of the physician are considered invalid.

Log into ECNU International Students online application website: http://lxsapply.ecnu.edu.cn/. Please register and submit the online application. Upload your application documents and pay the 800 RMB application fee online, which won’t be refunded.

* If you apply for scholarship, you have to register through the scholarship website as well.

02 Post your application documents

* Students must pay the application fee to complete their application procedures. Incomplete application documents or fake application documents will be regarded to be invalid.

* The application documents and application fee will not be returned no matter whether you are accepted or not.

03 Track your application status online

Check your email or log into your ECNU online application account to track your application status.
* Make sure your email address is correct and check your email from time to time, otherwise you might miss IMPORTANT INFORMATION, eg the arrangement of interview etc.

04 Admission and university enrollment

The final result of your application will be announced in your application account.

Admitted students must register at the university on the prescribed dates mentioned on the admission letter and bring the original graduation certificate and degree certificate to be checked. Your enrollment will be canceled without providing the relevant certificates.

Application remarks

1. Applicants must ensure that the application information and application materials provided are true and accurate. If the admissions unit or certification department verifies that anything in the application is not true, the application, admission or study qualification will be canceled.

2. Graduate students are not allowed to be enrolled in two or more programs at the same time.
