A comprehensive museum focusing on local natural and cultural heritage, the China (Hainan) Museum of The South China Sea strives to boost cultural exchanges between the countries and regions along the Maritime Silk Road. Covering a construction area of more than 70,000 square meters, the museum was designed by the academician He Jingtang at the South China University of Technology. The design combines modern aesthetic styles with more traditional Chinese cultural elements, and resembles a boat floating on the sea.
The museum consists of two exhibitions zones. The southern zone is home to eight indoor showrooms and one open-air showroom, while the northern zone highlights the museum's social functions. There are more than 70,000 collected pieces in the museum, including exported antiques from past dynasties, biological samples and cultural relics from the South China Sea, and a variety of ship models. Meanwhile, a complete set of high-tech facilities is used for collection conservation and research.
At present, the museum features four permanent exhibitions, offering a panoramic picture of the human history and natural ecology of the South China Sea, the protection of cultural relics, and the exchanges between China and its neighboring countries.
