Fengxiang Road viaduct in Wuxi's Huishan district opened to traffic on Feb 8 after over three years of closed construction.

The 10.3-kilometer viaduct connects the main urban area of Wuxi and Huishan New City, as well as reaches Jiangyin to the north, which is key to the city's express road network, said Yang Wei from the Wuxi Key Construction Project Management Center.

Construction on Fengxiang Road restarted on Feb 8 to extend north to Xuxiake Avenue in Jiangyin, a prefecture-level city of Wuxi.

The project starts from the south side of Yanyu Road, with the main line viaduct connecting with the Fengxiang Road viaduct to the south, running along the former Xicheng Road. After passing through the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway through a tunnel, it will land on the south side of Yansheng Road, and then develop as a viaduct northward into Jiangyin.

A woman surnamed Yu said that with the Fengxiang Road viaduct, her travel time to go to work from Huishan New City to Jiangnan University has been reduced from over half an hour to 15 minutes.

The north extension of Xingchang Road, another north-south channel of Wuxi, also opened to traffic on Feb 8, connecting with North Xingchang Road and Huiji Avenue.

A total of 10 projects to upgrade the city's road transportation network started construction on the same day, including repairs on National Highway 312 and Gaolang Road.

The 17-kilometer National Highway 312 in Wuxi will be rebuilt as a trunk road, with a designed speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.

Officials said construction on these road projects will be promoted as an important goal during the 14th Five Year Plan period (2021-25).
