The total container throughput of Yangshan Port in Pudong New Area, Shanghai exceeded 200 million twenty-foot equivalent units on Jan 23 after a Danish vessel completed unloading at the port, according to local media.

Statistics show that it took the port six years and two months to break the 50-million-TEU threshold. It later took two and a half years for the throughput to grow from 150 million TEUs to 200 million TEUs.

The port's automated wharf alone handled 4.2 million TEUs in 2020, up 90 TEUs compared to the previous year.

From Jan 1 to 20 this year, the port's average throughput was 64,400 TEUs per day, an increase of 18.4 percent year-on-year.

To further expand its capacity, the fourth phase of the Yangshan Port will increase its capacity to more than 5 million TEUs by introducing another 15 cranes and 25 automatic guided vehicles this year.

Officials said that the port will continue to strengthen epidemic prevention and control work to ensure safe and stable operations. The local authority will also deepen reform in administrative procedures and improve its services to create a better business environment.
