Dongsha ancient fishing town in Zhoushan was recently designated a candidate to become a national 4A scenic area - the second highest in China's grading system for scenic areas, according to local media reports.
A total of 19 scenic areas in East China's Zhejiang province made the list, but Dongsha was the only one located in Zhoushan.
The town sits next to the Dongsha fishing port, which is said to have been established during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
It is renowned for its rich fishing history and culture. In 2019, the town was selected as one of China's top 10 models for the integration of tourism and intangible cultural heritage.
It has more than 30 intangible cultural heritages, including fisherman's paintings, decorative fishing knots, and glove puppet shows.
By regularly staging shows and exhibitions and setting up stores selling intangible cultural heritage items, the town has managed to preserve its culture and revitalize its economy.
