Guangzhou Northern Water Plant, which is being built in Yagang village, Shijing town in Guangzhou's Baiyun district, is currently the biggest water plant in the world in terms of supplying water by using ultrafiltration membrane for deep processing.

According to Guangzhou Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute Co Ltd (GZMEDRI), the technical supplier of the water plant, the water plant has made great contributions in offering high quality drinking water for people in the north Guangzhou area, including Baiyun district and Huadu district.

The water plant was designed with a scale of processing 1.5 million cubic meter water a day and its first phase, costing 2.51 billion yuan ($353.11 million), can handle 600,000 cu m per day.

The construction for the water plant has made several innovations, such as applying the design concepts of green buildings and sponge cities, as well as integrating Lingnan cultural elements in the overall planning and landscape design.

A person in charge from GZMEDRI said that the operation of the water plant has offered strong support for local socioeconomic development by solving water shortages. The innovations made in the project have made it a demonstration project in China's hydrotech water supply industry.
