May 16: Daily briefing on novel coronavirus cases in China

On May 15, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 8 new cases of confirmed infections (2 indigenous cases in Jilin province and 6 imported cases, 5 in Shanghai municipality and 1 in Hainan province), 2 new cases of suspected infections (both are imported cases in Shanghai), and no deaths. 10 patients were released from hospital after being cured. 745 people who had had close contact with infected patients were freed from medical observation. The number of serious cases remained unchanged.

As of 24:00 on May 15, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps had reported 1,698 cases of imported confirmed infections and no deaths. In all, 1,652 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 46 confirmed cases (including 3 in serious condition) and 3 suspected cases.

As of 24:00 on May 15, the National Health Commission had received reports of 82,941 confirmed cases and 4,633 deaths in 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, and in all 78,219 patients had been cured and discharged from hospital. There still remained 89 confirmed cases (including 11 in serious condition) and 3 suspected cases. So far, 739,278 people have been identified as having had close contact with infected patients. 5,053 are now under medical observation.

On May 15, 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland as well as the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps reported 13 new asymptomatic cases (including 1 imported case). 70 asymptomatic cases were freed from medical observation (including 5 imported cases) and 1 (imported case) became a confirmed case. As of 24:00 on May 15, 561 asymptomatic cases were still under medical observation (including 30 imported cases).

As of 24:00 on May 15, 1,537 confirmed infections had been reported in the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan province: 1,052 in Hong Kong (4 had been dead and 1,019 had been cured and discharged from hospital), 45 in Macao (43 had been cured and discharged from hospital) and 440 in Taiwan (7 had been dead and 387 had been cured and discharged from hospital).
