A slew of new schools and kindergartens are to be built in Dalian, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, with more subject to renovation this year, according to local education authorities.

It is part of Dalian’s efforts to boost education modernization and meet growing demands on preschool, primary and secondary school resources.

The Donggang No 2 Primary School in Zhongshan district will become operational soon, with the Dongguan No 4 Primary School ready to start construction. It also will turn some community-affiliated kindergartens into non-profit kindergartens open to the public.

Elsewhere, Xigang district plans to spend about 30 million yuan ($4.2 million) renovating facilities and structures, improving equipment, recruiting high-caliber teaching staff and developing school-based curriculums in schools across the region. Local authorities also will promote mental health education among teachers and students.

In Shahekou, the district will expand its non-profit preschool education resources, including renovating two public kindergartens and adding an extra 280 admission slots there.

At the same time, the district will increase policy support for private non-profit kindergartens as it expects to see two new ones this year, along with 210 more admission slots. In addition, about 2 million yuan will be invested to upgrade firefighting and lightning protection facilities of two schools.

For its part, Ganjingzi district will set up four public affiliated kindergartens in communities, identify and support five new private non-profit kindergartens and add more than 1,000 studying positions for kids.

In addition, five primary and secondary schools will be built and put into use, providing facilities for 6,210 students in the district. Seven more are expected to break ground this year.
