Chengdu has a long history, profound cultural heritage, excellent geographical location, and rich tourism resources, such as Dujiangyan, Mount Qingcheng, Xiling Snow Mountain, the Jinsha Site, Wuhou Memorial Temple, Dufu Thatched Cottage, and Yongling Mausoleum. Focused on pandas, Jiaozi (the world's first banknote issued in ancient China), the greenway, leisure and foods, Chengdu vigorously implements the strategy of tourism internationalization, "Tourism plus" and "plus Tourism".

In 2018, Chengdu received 240 million tourists with a total tourism income of 371.26 billion yuan ($53.23), an increase of 22.4 percent. At the Twelfth High-level Forum on China’s Consumer Economy and China Tourism Industry Summit 2018, Chengdu won the title of "China's Preferred Destination". Chengdu was also listed in the annual top 10 new cultural tourism communication cities during the Third Bo’ao International Tourism Communication Forum and Bo’ao Tourism Communication Award (TC award) in 2018.
