Hohhot, capital city of North China’s Inner Mongolia autonomous region, is to further expand its public transport, with the recent release of new urban public transport implementation recommendations, according to a Nov 12 report in the Hohhot Daily.

According to the recommendations, by 2020 the daily passenger capacity of the city’s buses is expected to reach 2 million passengers, and the bus network will cover 100 percent of the main and secondary roads. The total bus fleet will then comprise 2,886 buses.

The proportion of new energy pure electric buses will reach more than 55 percent, and the bus lanes in the city will be extended to 226 kilometers, officials said.

To date, Hohhot has built four bus rapid transit systems, or BRTs, and launched eight bus lines. A total of 260 buses are equipped to run a distance of 357.5 kilometers. In addition, 50 bus lines passing by communities have been established, at an average length of 10.3 kilometers.

By the end of 2021, the BRTs will be increased to 11 lines.

According to the Hohhot Public Transport Network Adjustment Plan, Hohhot has continued to optimize its bus network.

As of August, 243 lines were altered of which 136 were added, 98 were adjusted and nine were cancelled. There are more than 27 regular bus lines opening every year and nearly 50 lines are optimized and adjusted every year.

Since 2014, Hohhot Public Transport Corporation has successively launched 140 new energy buses, running routes connecting urban areas with the rural areas in the city. A total of 27 bus lines connecting urban and rural areas have been added, officials said.
