Preparatory work for the construction of a regenerative medicine institute of advanced study, jointly built by Hong Kong and Guangzhou, started on Sept 22 in Guangzhou.

Through the joint efforts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory (GRMH-GDL), the institute is expected to focus on areas in regenerative medicine, such as stem cell biology, organ reconstruction, and tissue engineering to push forward the transformation of basic research into practical therapy.

GRMH-GDL, which was set up in December 2017, is one of the first provincial laboratories to develop the reserves for constructing national laboratories in Guangdong. It operates as a public institution.

Rocky S. Tuan, president of CUHK, said that the institute will make full use of the advantages of both sides to become an important part of the international technological innovation center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

A new laboratory building applying to international leading standards of GRMH-GDL was put into operation on the same day, covering a total area of about 11,000 square meters. It will be able to hold over 200 researchers at the same time.
