Q: US House Speaker Pelosi issued a statement on August 6, saying that the "extraordinary outpouring of courage" from the people of Hong Kong stands in stark contrast to a government that refuses to respect the rule of law or live up to the "one country, two systems" framework. She calls on Democrats and Republicans in Congress to stand in unity with the people of Hong Kong in demanding a hopeful, free and democratic future. She will continue to advance the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, and fight to preserve democratic freedoms and the rule of law in Hong Kong. I wonder if you have any comments on that?

A: The recent demonstrations in Hong Kong have turned into radical, violent and illegal behaviors. A small number of radicals randomly blocked metro train doors, paralyzed major traffic routes, disrupted a cross-harbor tunnel, vandalized traffic lights, besieged and attacked police offices in various districts, and even threw petrol bombs at the police, set fire and hid a lot of offensive weapons. They blatantly trampled on Hong Kong's rule of law, seriously threatened local residents' lives and flagrantly challenged national sovereignty and dignity. Such violent and illegal behaviors and support and tolerance of them are a brutal violation of democracy, freedom and the rule of law.

Nancy Pelosi and some other US politicians have been calling white black time and again, bolstering violent radical criminals and even justifying and whitewashing their behaviors. They've also wantonly smeared and vilified the just move of the SAR government and police to uphold the rule of law and order. This is no different from covering up, conniving at and supporting illegal criminal behaviors, which again reveals their malicious intention of anti-China and messing up Hong Kong.

Since the return of Hong Kong, policies including "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy have been earnestly carried out. Hong Kong people's rights and freedoms have been fully guaranteed. Those are undeniable facts for any unbiased person. The future and destiny of Hong Kong must and can only be put in the hands of all Chinese people, including the Hong Kong compatriots.

The Chinese side must once again urge the relevant American politicians to immediately stop condoning violent crimes and grossly interfering in Hong Kong affairs. Any attempt to undermine "one country, two systems" and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability will surely be resolutely opposed by all Chinese people, including the Hong Kong compatriots. Any attempt to interfere in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs is doomed to fail.
