Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital was founded in 1941 and given its current name in 1952. It was rated as one of the first batch of national 3A-grade hospitals in 1989. The hospital is also known as Sichuan Provincial Academy of Medical Sciences due to its merging with the academy in 2002.
Currently, the hospital has 4,132 patient beds and 6,855 staff members, of whom 1,002 have senior titles and 52 enjoy special allowances awarded by the State Council.
Six of the hospital's departments – laboratory medicine, clinical care, nephrology, emergency medicine, critical care medicine and clinical pharmacy – are listed as national key clinical specialties. Twenty-nine departments are among the provincial key medical disciplines.
There are also three secondary laboratories of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the hospital, four provincial key laboratories, three provincial research centers for clinical medicine, and 15 provincial-level control centers for medical treatment quality.
As the affiliated hospital of the University of Electronic Science and Technology and the clinical teaching base for the province's medical colleges and universities, the hospital has more than 200 master's and doctoral supervisors, and is the authorized unit for three doctoral degree programs and nine master's degree programs.
The hospital is the emergency center of Sichuan province. It took the lead in forming the only national health emergency rescue team in Southwest China, and establishing an aviation medical assistance platform.
In recent years, the hospital has undertaken more than 100 national projects, and won one second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards and over 90 awards for scientific and technological achievements at ministerial or provincial level. Nearly 1,000 SCI (Science Citation Index) papers were published in prestigious international academic journals.
It has also established close partnerships with renowned medical and scientific research institutions in 28 countries and regions around the world.
By cooperating with the Harvard Medical School, the hospital established the country's first heterotransplantation laboratory. The laboratory for genetic research of human diseases was also built up in cooperation with the University of Utah in the United States.
