Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University

Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University (RHWU), also known as Hubei General Hospital, was set up in 1923, being one of the first government-run public hospitals and medical schools in China and the first of its kind in Hubei province at that time.

The hospital has three campuses with a total of 5,000 patient beds. The main campus has 3,500 beds with advanced facilities while the east campus in the Optics Valley of China was constructed according to international first-class standards, placing 1,500 hospital-beds, which was put in use in August 2013. The campus in Hongshan is designed to be a health resort with beautiful environment and is expected to finish construction by the end of 2021.

The annual patient number of outpatient departments in 2018 reached about 5.2 million and the annual number of patients discharged in 2018 amounted to 205,000. A total of more than 95,000 surgical operations were conducted in 2018.

The hospital was authorized to set up first-level discipline doctoral degrees and post-doctoral research station in clinical medicine. Every year there are over 100 doctoral candidates, 200 postgraduate students, 300 medical students and more than 500 specialist physicians starting from RHWU and entering China and the world.

Currently the hospital employs over 6,000 staff members and 720 of them hold senior titles. Department of cardiovascular medicine is listed as national key specialty and nine departments are among national key clinical specialties such as thoracic surgery, psychologic medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, laboratory medicine and clinical care.
