Guangdong Modern Dance Company, a troupe based in Guangzhou, staged a grand show in Lisbon, Portugal on June 1 to mark the celebration of 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal.

They performed the work Sumeru, which is based on traditional Chinese culture and Buddhist imagery. Sumeru means that the smallest thing in the world can contain the largest thing. The performance is a game of physical interactions, gradually disclosing a world full of delicate, layered, and ever changing connections and relationships through the dancers' fluid and intriguing movements.

More than 1,000 people, including government officials from the Guangdong provincial government, the Culture and Tourism Department of Guangdong Province, and Chinese Embassy in Portugal, watched the show.

As a classic work of the Guangzhou dance troupe, the show has been performed overseas many times and has been widely acclaimed at international theaters and dance festivals.
