A high-speed multipurpose trial train traveled from Ulaanqab Station to Huai'an, Zhangjiakou (a city in North China's Hebei province) on June 1, signaling the start of the trial period for the newly-built Zhangjiakou-Hohhot high-speed railway.

The Zhangjiakou-Hohhot high-speed railway is an important part of the national long-term railway network plan. Construction on the railway began in 2014, and it has a total length of 286.8 kilometers. The Ulaanqab-Hohhot section began operating on Aug 3, 2017.

For its test run, the train will travel from Ulaanqab Station in Inner Mongolia to Huai'an Station in Hebei Province, a distance of about 114 kilometers. After the grassland high-speed railway begins operating, travel time between Hohhot and Beijing will be shortened from 10 hours to 3 hours.
