Kaihua awarded title ‘County of Apis Cerana’

Kaihua, a county in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, was awarded the title of County of Apis Cerana at the third World Bee Day held in Tonglu, Zhejiang on May 20.

The cultivation of apis cerana in Kaihua enjoys a long history and the creature has been praised as the god of fortune by local residents.

Statistics show that in 2018, there were more than 2,376 apis cerana farmers in the county keeping a total of 32,400 swarms of apis cerana.

The swarms of apis cerana are capable of producing over 120 tons of honey and brought in 40 million yuan ($5.79 million) each year, making it a new driver for agricultural economy in the county.

At present, Kaihua county has established a Beekeepers Association, a Native Honey League and 19 apis cerana farming demonstration villages.

Moving forward, Kaihua will exert every effort to advance its bee farming industry by formulating a set of industrial standards, making a publicity pamphlet and releasing a promotional video.
