The zone's predecessor, Huanggang Technology and Economic Development Zone, was established in June 1990. It was upgraded to a provincial-level high-tech zone in July 2000 and renamed Huanggang High-Tech Industrial Development Zone.

The zone was located in the new urban area of Huanggang city, with a planned area of 12.38 sq km for its core area, 21.58 sq km for its Nanhu Industrial Park, and 39.77 sq km for the extended area.

The hi-tech zone is blessed with convenient water, as well as land and air transportation. It is 90 km from the Wuhan Tianhe International Airport and 18 km from the Huangzhou Railway Station on the Beijing-Kowloon Railway Line, and is adjacent to the Shanghai-Chengdu and Beijing-Zhuhai expressways. It has a river port along the Yangtze River.

Its pillar industries include mechanic-electronic integration, biomedicine, new materials, informatization of manufacturing and agriculture products processing.
