Yichang Hi-Tech Industry Development Zone was founded in December 1999 with the approval of the Hubei provincial government. In December 2010, it was upgraded to a national-level high-tech zone by the State Council.

The zone has industrial clusters in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, modern equipment manufacturing, fine phosphorous chemicals and modern services placed in such industrial areas as Dongshan Park, Xiaoting Park, Shenzhen Industrial Park, Baiyang Industrial Park and Yichang Biological Park.

Located in Yichang city, which is a transportation hub in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the zone enjoys a well-developed multi-level transportation network of waterway, highways, railways and airports. Yichang is rich in hydroelectric power, minerals, forests and tourism resources. The city has the world's largest hydropower base. The six industrial parks in the zone cover an area of more than 100 sq km. Their abundant land resources can meet the demands of various investment projects. The zone also enjoys a raft of preferential policies as a national hi-tech zone, a national bio-industry base and a beneficiary of the local government.
