Quzhou in East China's Zhejiang province completed its first 5G video phone call backed the country's telecom carrier China Unicom on May 17.

The phone call signifies an important move for the city's 5G construction after the successful launch of its first 5G base station at Jianglang Mountain scenic area last month.

Chen Hongtao, deputy general manager of the Zhejiang subsidiary of China Unicom, made the phone call using his normal SIM card and a 5G phone. The technology doesn't require the changing of one's SIM card, phone number or mobile package.

Compared with the 4G network, the 5G network features ultrahigh transmission rates, enhanced capacity and reduced latency.

As 5G technology matures, network speeds will hit 20 Gbps, 100 times faster than that of the current 4G network. It will take only one second to download a 1GB movie.

The first 5G technology experience store in Quzhou was opened to the public on the same day, allowing local residents to try out virtual reality (VR) games and watch VR videos under the 5G network.
