Ordos gets another academician workstation

The city of Ordos in Inner Mongolia autonomous region got another new type of research institute called academician workstation – that focuses on agricultural research – an event that  marked by a ceremony at Ordos High-tech Industrial Development Zone on May 15.

It was the seventh academician workstation that has been established in the zone.

The academician workstation is a new type of research institute, that is promoted by the government and driven by the demand for innovation, while led by academicians from two renowned academies -- the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The workstation is usually regarded as a useful platform to promote local technical research. 

Ding Dewen, academic from the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Gao Jixi, director of the Center for Health and Environment at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment; Li Peijun, chief scientist of the National 973 Program; Yi Wei, vice-mayor of Danjiangkou city in Hubei province, and Yu Renjie, vice-mayor of Ordos, attended the ceremony.

At present, Ordos has a total of 16 academician workstations, accounting for nine percent of the total in Inner Mongolia. The research interest of the workstations cover the fields of new energy, new materials, environmental protection, bioengineering and medicine. 

In 2014, Ordos set up Inner Mongolia’s first international academician workstation to attract foreign top scholars to work in the city. 

As of now, the city has 16 academicians, including seven academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, seven from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and two from Mongolia. 

The workstations have brought nearly 350 high-level tech workers together, contributing to the development of the city.

Officials said that more than 40 scientific programs have been carried out at these workstations in Ordos.
