Constructed in 1958, Danjiangkou Reservoir was one of the largest reservoirs in Asia. Lying in Xichuan county, Nanyang and Danjiangkou, Hubei province, it is a multi-purpose reservoir created by the Danjiangkou Dam and used for the supply of water for the region as well as irrigation, electricity generation and flood control.

Nanyang is the birth place of Zhang Zhongjing, one of the most eminent Chinese physicians during the later years of the Han dynasty (AD 25-220). Dubbed as a "Medical Sage", he learned medicine by studying from his fellows and later his teacher Zhang Bozu. Collecting many prescriptions, he wrote the medical masterpiece Shanghan Zabing Lun, and made great contribution to the development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Wuhou Memorial Temple, which dates back more than 1,800 years, was built to honor Zhuge Liang, a statesman and military strategist, who lived as a hermit. Zhu cultivated fields around what is today Nanyang, during the Three Kingdoms Period (AD220-280). The site is a 4A-Grade tourist attraction in the city.

Dubbed as the "Pearl in Danjiang River", Meditation Valley is located in Xichuan county, Nanyang, on the west bank of Danjiang Reservoir. Its name comes from Huizhong, an eminent monk during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), who often took his disciples to meditate there.

Located in Nanyang's Xixia county, the Dinosaur Relics Park is China's only museum featuring dinosaur egg fossils. The museum not only displays unearthed dinosaur eggs at a relic exhibition hall, but also has a 4D cinema and a "spatial-temporal tunnel" showcasing global ecological evolution. The park was listed as a national 5A scenic spot in 2014.
