The Majishan iron ore transit port in Shengsi county, Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, handled 234 ships from January to April, importing 10.01 million metric tons of iron ore, according to statistics from Zhoushan Customs.

The port was built by Baosteel, the largest iron & steel corporation in China, in 1998 and entered operation in 2002. It is currently one of Zhoushan's top three iron ore transit ports.

Ore throughput at the port hit a record high of 63.03 million tons last year, the eighth consecutive year that the figure has surpassed 60 million. As of March 18 the port had handled a total of more than 800 million tons of iron ore since 2002.

"We see more than 20 cargo ships from overseas countries such as Brazil and Australia berth or transit here every month," said a person in charge of the port.
