Guangzhou, the capital city of South China's Guangdong province, will build a large recycling center for waste furniture, expected to play a big part in helping construct an environmentally friendly city in the months ahead, Guangzhou Daily reported.

The city is now soliciting public feedback for the center's environmental protection assessment.

Located in Dashi township in the city's Panyu district, the recycling center is designed to be able to cope with more than 240,000 disposable beds, weighing about 9,600 metric tons, and more than 600 metric tons of other waste furniture a year, Guangzhou Daily reported.

Covering an area of more than 40,000 square meters, the recycling center, the first of its kind in the southern metropolis, is expected to be put into operation in December.

It will play a significant role in helping handle the growing number of waste furniture dumped by local companies and residents annually.

The center, with a construction floor space of 18,557 square meters, includes a main engineering project as well as supporting facilities and those for environmental protection.

When waste furniture are transported to the center, they will be dismantled and classified as wood, metal, plastic and other materials for recycling or waste treatment.

According to official statistics, Guangzhou which has a population of more than 16 million, is now treating more than 25,000 metric tons of garbage daily.
