The achievements made by Kaihua, Longyou counties in Quzhou, East China's Zhejiang province in sponge city construction recently won provincial recognition.

Kaihua county has applied the sponge city principles into the construction of its new and old urban districts in recent years.

Take the Kaiyuan Square for example. Part of the rainwater around the square is flown into the square's sponge facilities to water its ornamental plants and part for rainwater pipelines.

In addition, Kaihua has also built permeable roads along the Jiangbin road and paved gravel paths at Longtan Park, which lays a solid foundation for its sponge city construction.

Kaihua will establish another 20 square kilometers sponge city area and invest 720 million yuan ($105.72 million) in 12 other sponge city projects.

Longyou county has established a rainwater runoff control system to make the rainwater naturally accumulate and permeate in a bid to ease the burden of rainwater pipelines.

The second phase of its Jiangbin Park has constructed an aquatic system and an ecological corridor to reduce the bad influence of architecture construction to ecological environment.

By the end of 2019, Longyou will complete 33 of its sponge city projects.

A sponge city is a city that is designed to passively absorb, clean and use rainfall in an ecologically friendly way that reduces dangerous and polluted runoff.

Associated techniques include permeable roads, rooftop gardens, rainwater harvesting, rain gardens, green space and blue space such as ponds and lakes.
