Huaniaoshan Lighthouse in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province was recently named a Chinese industrial heritage, local media reported on April 28.

Located on Huaniao Island of the city's Shengsi county, the lighthouse was built by China Customs in 1870 and is one of the oldest lighthouses in the country.

The lighthouse also enjoys a significant location at the junction of the Yangtze River estuary and China's north-south coastal route, from where ships at home and abroad enter Shanghai, Ningbo and Zhoushan.

The lighthouse stands 16.5 meters high, and is equipped with a complete set of supporting facilities, including a radio tower, power house, machine house, warehouse and wharf. It covers 22,000 square meters in total.

Owing to its large size, complete functionality, and historical and geographical significance, it was dubbed the "No 1 Lighthouse in the Far East". It was also honored in 2001 by the State Council as a key cultural relic under State protection.
