A new research institute focusing on advanced technology was unveiled at a forum in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on April 25.

Jointly developed by the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Science and Qiantang New Area in Hangzhou, the institute will focus on achieving R&D and technological transformation through the integration of talent and innovation resources.

"We will expand cooperation with enterprises and universities and create a sound environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, so as to accelerate the transformation of scientific research achievements," said Li Ming, head of the newly-launched institute, adding that research topics will include the application of blockchain technology in archives management and how internet of things will facilitate air transport.

The joint venture will focus on the practical use of scientific and technological achievements instead of basic research study, while stepping up efforts to develop the biomedical industry, according to Li.

Four major cooperation projects in the areas of biomedicine and information technology were signed at the forum.

Qiantang New Area, consisting of Hangzhou Economic and Technological Development Area and Hangzhou Dajiangdong Industrial Cluster across the Qiantang River, was established on April 18.

As a state-level innovation and demonstration base, the new area now houses a batch of Global Fortune 500 companies and over 20 universities and innovative research institutes.
