Harbin Engineering University received approval from the Education Ministry on April 10 to establish a laboratory for international cooperation in ship and ocean engineering technology, according to the university.

The laboratory will be jointly established by Harbin Engineering University and the University of Lisbon in Portugal to promote scientific research cooperation between the two parties and help cultivate talent in ship and ocean engineering.

The laboratory will focus on six major areas: structural mechanics for ship and ocean engineering, hydrodynamics, ship design and manufacturing technology, marine engineering technology, marine renewable energy technology, and marine unmanned system technology. It will carry out research on relevant scientific issues, cutting-edge technology, and applied technical cooperation.

The two universities will also cooperate in research on the characteristics of deep water malformation waves, the short-term statistical probability distribution of irregular waves, ship structural safety, structural health monitoring systems, and marine engineering equipment maintenance technology based on risk assessment, design technology for polar ships, the ocean new energy efficient conversion theory, comprehensive utilization technology, intelligent decision-making, and control technology for unmanned systems.
