Hohhot ecology and environment department introduced drones – known more formally as unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs – from the beginning of April, in order to monitor the local environment, according to officials.

In partnership with a tech company based in Shenzhen, the department conducted training to help related workers operate the UAVs.

The move is part of efforts made by the local government to improve its environmental management through the employment of advanced technologies.

Officials said that the UAVs can fly quickly over fairly large areas, to assist with mapping and environmental monitoring. They can accomplish these tasks much more quickly and cost-effectively than other methods and are ideal for remote or hard-to-reach locations.

With all sorts of technologies at hand – including cameras, wind gauges and more – the UAVs can be used to collect important environmental data and track pollution sources.

According to the local government, Hohhot has introduced a total of 10 UAVs to help with the environment.
