Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province will soon enter the era of 5G as China Mobile Zhoushan recently launched the city's first 5G base stations on Yushan Island, Daishan county and the urban district of Dinghai.

The Yushan Green Petrochemical Base and Dinghai CBD are looking to realize 5G network coverage in the near future.

The 5G network, or the fifth generation mobile communications network, enables an ultrahigh data transmission rate that is hundreds of times faster than the 4G network.

5G opens up new possibilities for a multitude of life-transforming applications - from 3D video to immersive media, autonomous vehicles and the enablement of smart cities. It is also the key to unlocking other technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and the internet of things (IoT).

"With the support of the local government, we have gotten everything ready in terms of human resources, materials and funds for the 5G stations. Next we will enter the construction and testing phases for the stations, and we will try to put them into commercial use as soon as possible," said a person in charge at China Mobile Zhoushan.

In June 2018, China Mobile Zhejiang signed an agreement with the administrative committee of the Yushan Green Petrochemical Base and the Zhejiang Petrochemical Co to build a leading intelligent park in China by using the technologies of 5G, IoT, big data and cloud computing.

The 5G base stations launched on Yushan Island will help accelerate the building of such a park.

China Mobile Zhoushan will step up efforts in the construction of 5G network and explore 5G applications in telemedicine, education, tourism, fishing and marine commerce, according to the person in charge at China Mobile Zhoushan.
