At a news conference on the sidelines of the two sessions on March 11, Minister of Science and Technology Wang Zhigang said that China will strengthen support for fundamental research, improve the scientific research innovation ecology and accelerate building an innovation-driven country.
Wang said that to become an innovation-driven country where technological innovation is the core driving force of economic and social development, China should lead the world in terms of scientific capacity and innovation capacity.
According to Wang, the country's "three-step" strategy to build an innovation-driven country is to enter the group of innovation-driven counties by 2020, become a leading innovation-driven country by 2035, and become a leading power in science and innovation by 2050.
In 2018, China ranked 17th in the world for its comprehensive technological innovation level, according to World Intellectual Property Organization, and China's technology contribution rate is 58.5 percent. It is expected that by 2020 China's comprehensive technological innovation will rise to rank 15th worldwide, and its technology contribution rate will increase to 60 percent.
