The fast-tracked Humen Second Bridge (Nansha Bridge) is conducting load tests and is expected to be completed before May 1.

The bridge will be the first super project to be opened for use after the announcement of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan.

The Plan proposed to speed up the construction of the Shenzheng-Zhongshan Bridge and the Nansha Bridge crossing. According to the Guangdong Provincial Transportation Group, the construction of Nansha Bridge is progressing smoothly. The main structure of the civil works is basically completed, and the final-stage works such as asphalt paving, expansion installation, load tests, and electromechanical safety tests are being carried out.

The bridge is a new artery following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. It has a total length of 12.89 kilometers and adopts a two-way eight-lane highway standard. The design speed is 100 kilometers per hour and the designed service life is 100 years.

Nansha Bridge connects Guangzhou and Dongguan and is expected to handle 120,000 vehicles per day, exceeding the design standard of 80,000 vehicles. It will effectively relieve the pressure now on the Humen Bridge. The journey from Guangzhou Nansha to Dongguan Humen will be shortened from over 60 to 15 minutes.

The bridge main line adopts a special mode. Two super-kilometer cross-river suspension bridges, the Dasha Waterway Bridge and the Weizhou Waterway Bridge, have been built, the first such design in the world.
