Currently, the Greater Bay Area has 20 Fortune 500 companies and over 43,000 national high-tech enterprises. Guangdong has a total of 901 incubators, 804 public creation spaces, 139 national incubator units, and a number of research institutions established by Hong Kong and Macao universities. The Greater Bay Area has formed a new generation of strategic emerging industrial clusters with an output value exceeding 100 billion yuan ($14.9 billion), such as mobile communication and flat panel display.

The development plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area stresses the promotion of a number of major industrial projects in 10 fields, including new display, new generation communication technology, 5G and mobile internet, biomedicine, high-end medical diagnosis and treatment equipment, genetic testing, modern Chinese medicine, smart robotics, 3D printing, and Beidou satellite application.

The plan states that the Greater Bay Area will cultivate and strengthen strategic emerging industries, as well as build strategic emerging industrial clusters with international competitiveness utilizing the help of the scientific research resources and high-tech industry basis of central cities such as Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, and high-end platforms such as national new districts, national independent innovation demonstration zones, and national high-tech zones.
Guangdong province will focus on the development of a new generation of information technology industry, bio-industry, high-end equipment and new materials industry, green low-carbon industry, and digital creative industry, as well as advance the strategic development of aerospace, future networks, life sciences, nuclear technology, and other strategic industries.
