Mengzi Economic and Technological Development Zone was approved to be a national-level development zone by the State Council on Jan 17, 2013.
Covering a planned area of 110 square kilometers, the zone stretches across three cities: Mengzi, Gejiu and Kaiyuan and is the largest and nearest national level economic development zone close to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
By the end of 2016, the zone had clustered 527 enterprises and formed six pillar industries: steel, metallurgy, energy and chemicals, biological resources, building materials and electromechanics. At the same time, industries such as new energy and new materials, equipment and manufacturing, textiles and clothing and modern logistics are under accelerated development.
During the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the zone achieved total industrial output value of 204.37 billion yuan ($30.45 billion), industrial added value of 45.26 billion yuan, prime operating revenue of 186.86 billion yuan, fixed asset investment of 16.81 billion yuan and total fiscal revenue of 1.89 billion yuan.
In 2016, the zone reached total industrial output value of 54.54 billion yuan, with year-on-year growth of 16.88 percent; industrial added value of 12.45 billion yuan, up by 24.23 percent year-on-year and fixed asset investment of 4.41 billion yuan, up by 9.4 percent from the previous year.
