Wuhu High-Tech Industrial Development Zone was approved to be set up in 2001 and was upgraded into national-level in 2010.
In 2016, the zone's GDP reached nearly 32.9 billion yuan ($4.84 billion), and it made progress in the adjustment of industrial structure, with strategic emerging industries accounting for 50 percent of the total scale.
The zone features abundant energy, complete transportation and communication facilities and rich human resources. It focuses on the development of energy conservation and environmental protection industry, such as new energy cars and smart grid; software and information industry, such as service outsourcing, e-commerce and software training; and health care industry.
