Alibaba Group was founded in 1999 by 18 people led by Jack Ma, a former English teacher from Hangzhou, China. It operates various businesses and derives support for the group's ecosystem from the businesses and services of related and affiliated companies. Its major businesses and those of related companies include: Taobao Marketplace, TMALL, Aliexpress, Alibaba.com, 1688.com, Alimama, Alibaba Cloud, Cainiao Network, and Ant Financial. Today the company and its associated companies operate leading wholesale and retail online marketplaces as well as businesses in cloud computing, digital media and entertainment, innovation initiatives and other areas.
In January 2018, Alibaba Silk Road headquarters was inaugurated in Xi’an, with a total land area of about 512 acres. The newly established headquarters will build eight functional sectors in Xi’an, including a financial west center, an Alibaba Cloud west data center, a new retail research and development center, an e-commerce enterprise service center, a CSN development center, an innovation and entrepreneurship guidance center, the Alibaba Business School, and an e-commerce enterprise cluster.
