Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone, located in Suzhou’s Kunshan city, was set up in 1985. It was listed by Jiangsu Provincial People's Government in January 1991 as one of the key development zones in Jiangsu.
In August 1992, Kunshan Economic and Technological Development Zone was upgraded to a national-level zone approved by the State Council with an administrative area of 115 square kilometers.
After 10 years' development, the zone has become a modern comprehensive center, taking the lead in the country and forming a group of distinctive national-level industrial zones, such as the comprehensive bonded area, an opto-electronics industrial park and an innovation park for overseas talents.
By the end of 2018, 2,360 foreign-funded companies from 51 countries and regions have settled in the zone, with their overall investments reaching $39.6 billion.
The industrial output of the zone in 2018 was expected to reach 530 billion yuan ($78.07 billion), 500 billion yuan of which was from industries above designated scales. The total import and output value of the zone reached $70 billion, up 6.5 percent year-on-year.
