Located in Jiangsu's Wuxi, Xishan Economic and Technological Development Zone's construction started in 1992 and the area was approved to become a provincial-level development zone in 1993. In 2011, the zone was upgraded to national level by the State Council, becoming the first such zone in Wuxi city.
Currently the zone has four pillar industries: information technology (IT) and integrated circuits (IC), precision machinery, automobile parts and the modern services industry.
Five industrial clusters are expected to be established in the zone, covering precision machinery and intelligent equipment manufacturing, finished automobile and auto parts industry, an IT and IC industry, new energy and materials, and modern services.
National Xishan Economic and Technological Development Zone was ranked No 58 among all 219 national development zones in China, according to the comprehensive evaluation carried out by Ministry of Commerce in 2018. It ranked No 9 among all 110 development zones on and above provincial level in Jiangsu province in 2017.
In 2016, the zone's public budget revenue reached 2.46 billion yuan ($362.44 million) with a year-on-year growth of 18.2 percent, and its industrial output above scaled-size reached 52.03 billion yuan.
