Founded in October 1988, Changsha High-tech Zone was upgraded into a national high-tech zone under the approval of the State Council in March 1991, with a planning area of 140 square kilometers. Situated in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan province, the zone relies on abundant scientific research advantages, like Central South University, Hunan University and some 400 research institutions, as well as 13 academicians, all of which help the zone become a national science park with high technology and self-innovation.

Over the past years, the zone has witnessed a steady growth in its five leading industries: advanced equipment manufacturing, electronic information, new energy and energy conservation, new materials, and modern services. In September 2018, 11 industrial projects with a total investment of 14.21 billion yuan ($2.1 billion) were launched, which were expected to produce an annual output value of more than 60 billion yuan.

In 2016, its total income of enterprises and gross industrial output value hit 483.7 billion and 429.2 billion yuan respectively, ranking ninth and seventh among the 146 national high-tech zones. Through years of development, the zone has made remarkable achievements in its social development. The comprehensive assessment ranked 13th and the innovation ability was among the top 10 in the country. The zone has grown into the core park of the Xiangjiang New Area.
