Yichang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone in Hubei province, developed from the original Yichang Economic and Technology Development Zone, was set up in 1988 and become a provincial development zone in 1999. In 2010, it was upgraded to a State-level one.

Covering more than 100 square kilometers, Yichang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone is one of the demonstrations areas for transformation and upgrading in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. It has six industrial parks: Dongshan industrial park, a biological industrial park, an electronic information industrial park, Baiyang industrial park, Xiaoting industrial park and Hubei-Shenzhen industrial park.

In April 2017, China (Hubei) Pilot Free Trade Zone Yichang Area was set up, covering 27.97 sq km. Formed by Dongshan industrial park and the biological industrial park, the free trade zone focused on the development of industries such as electronic information, biomedicine, equipment manufacturing, cross-border electronic commerce and finance leasing.

In the first half of 2018, the zone achieved a total industrial output value of 7.35 billion yuan ($108.5 million), up 25.13 percent year-on-year. Fixed-asset investment in the same time period increased 26 percent year-on-year while foreign trade export increased 10.95 percent year-on-year. There are now 219 high-tech companies in the area.
