The municipal government of Guangzhou, Guangzhou University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) signed a cooperative agreement on establishment of a HKUST campus in Nansha district of Guangzhou on Dec 21.

According to the agreement, the Guangzhou government will provide 1.13 square kilometers of land for the school in Nansha, the geographic center of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It will also provide guarantees for construction and funding of the campus.

In the future, the parties will accelerate preparatory work and cooperate in building world-class universities and high-end scientific research and innovation platforms. They will also work together to develop industries and transform scientific research achievements for the market.

HKUST will provide strong talent and intellectual support for the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The cooperation is a good opportunity to further deepen exchanges between Guangzhou and Hong Kong in education, science and technology.

The parties started negotiations in March 2017. On Oct. 14, Guangzhou University and HKUST signed a cooperation letter of intent in Hong Kong.

Founded in 1991, HKUST is a world-renowned research university with breakthrough achievements in physics, engineering, business administration, biological science and biotechnology as well as environment and sustainable development.
