Shenjiamen Fishing Port, located in the southeast of Zhoushan Island, is the nation's largest natural fishing port and seafood distribution center. It is also known as a "Small Shanghai" for its busy commerce. The port has undergone several large-scale renovations since the 1960s and a fishing town at the port started construction in the second half of the year.

The five cross-sea bridges in Zhoushan, stretching 50 kilometers in total, connect Zhoushan Island with the neighboring city Ningbo. Having been put into operation since late 2009, it ends the days of isolation for Zhoushan and increases the city's role in the economic development of the Yangtze River Delta.

Zhejiang Ocean University, established in 1958 in Zhoushan, is the only marine college in Zhejiang province and an important base of marine education and research in China. It has been dedicated to the cultivation of marine talents to contribute to the nation's marine economic growth.
