Shanghai Science & Technology Museum
(上海科技馆 shàng hǎi kē jì guǎn)
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM) consists of three parts: the main hall, the Shanghai Natural History Museum at 510 West Beijing Road, and the Shanghai Planetarium at LinGang New City. It has a floor area of 68,000 square meters, and a construction area of 106,000 sq m.
There are 11 permanent thematic exhibition halls, including Home on Earth, Information Era, World of Robots, Light of Exploration, Spectrum of Life, Space Navigation, Earthcrust Exploration, two special galleries on World of Spiders and World of Animals and two relief galleries on Technologies in Ancient China and Science Explorers.
There are four special theaters in the museum: the IMAX 3D Theater, IMAX Dome Theater, IWERKS 4D Theater and the Space Theater. They constitute the largest science educational cinema complex in Asia, with over 10,000 shows a year.
Themed "Nature, Mankind, Technology", SSTM is ranked a first-class national museum and a 5A national tourist spot, and also as an educational excursion demonstration base and one of Shanghai’s landmarks. The museum is also a postdoctoral research center.
SSTM was selected as the seventh of the 20 most popular national museums in the world by the Themed Entertainment Association, an international nonprofit organization and the economics practice at AECOM, a multinational engineering firm.
