Dedicated to the history of the revolution at Hongyan, Chongqing, the museum is an amalgamation of local culture heritage sites related to China's revolutionary history, including Chongqing Hongyan Revolutionary Memorial, Chongqing Gele Mountain Revolutionary Memorial, the Exhibition Hall of the History of Democratic Parties in China and a group of revolutionary heritage sites.
Hongyan, originally a farm operated by Ms. Rao Guomo (1895-1960), was the seat of the agency of the Eighth Route Army of the Chinese Communist Party in Chongqing. Its name means "Red Rock" after the local geological feature known as the Danxia landform. Chongqing was the capital city of China during the war, the command post of the oriental battlefield of the world's anti-Fascism war, and the pivotal political stage for the Anti-Japanese National United Front initiated by the Communist Party of China.
Founded in January. 2007, Chongqing Hongyan Revolution History Museum is a bureau level public institution with full government funding. It administers 53 local cultural heritage sites, of which 33 are open to the public free of charge. In addition, four are designated as state-level foremost-protected historical heritage sites, one as a state-level memorial site in the category of the War against Japanese Aggression, one as a state-level memorial for the martyrs, and one as a municipal-level foremost protected cultural heritage site. The museum maintains a collection of 100,000 items documenting the revolutionary history at Hongyan of Chongqing in the first half of the 20th century.
