Founded in July 1950, the Shanghai Luxun Museum is the first memorial hall for famous figures after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 to commemorate Lu Xun(1881-1936), China's influential writer, thinker, translator, and active participant of the New Culture Movement in the early 20th century.

Originally situated on the site of the former residence of Lu Xun at Shanyin Road, Hongkou district of Shanghai, the museum was moved to Luxun Park at No 280 Sichuan North Road, in 1956. Lu Xun's tomb was also moved in the park the same year, whose grave stone inscriptions were written by Chairman Mao Zedong (1893-1976), the founding father of the People’s Republic of China.

The Shanghai Luxun Museum houses more than 78,000 artifacts, including Lu Xun’s manuscripts, clothes, articles of daily use, letters, photos, and his personal collections of books.

Apiece of plaster mask with Lu Xun’s eyebrows and beard, Lu Xun’s chest X-ray and the manuscripts of the collections of Lun Xun’s historical novels Old Tales Retold are among the most notable artifacts you should not miss at the museum.

Additionally, the memorial museum also holds more than 1,700 pieces of traditional Chinese paintings, wood-block prints, and oil painting by modern artists, such as Xie Zhiliu (1910-97), Cheng Shifa (1921-2007), and Chen Yifei (1946-2005).
