Putuo district in Zhoushan (equivalent to a county-level city in China's administrative division) was selected as one of the ten happiest county-level cities in China in 2018 by Oriental Outlook magazine's annual ranking, which was released on Nov 26.
One of China's most influential measurements of a city's overall development and its residents' quality of life, the rankings were released this month for the 12th consecutive year. More than one billion people have submitted completed questionnaires over the past 12 years.
The poll measures a city based on 16 established standards involving education, employment, medical care, public services and the environment. Ten prefecture-level cities and ten county-level cities stood out of 197 cities this year as the happiest cities in the country.
Coming third in the county-level list, Putuo district performs well in multiple aspects of life and for various achievements it has made over the years.
The district is well-developed in its foreign trade and health industries, as an important part of the China (Zhejiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone, and boasts the nation's largest natural fishing port.
It has strengthened reforms in streamlining administrative approval procedures and has been honored as a model district in the city and the whole province in this regard, greatly facilitating the registration and licensing of companies in the district.
It has also improved the local infrastructure, public services and city environment, with parks and gardens seen ubiquitously, schools and hospitals greatly renovated, and civil activities enriched, making itself a better place to live in.
