Harbin, capital city of Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, was voted as one of the first several “International Wetland Cities” at the 54th meeting of the standing committee of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat.

A total of 18 cities around the world won the honor. Other cities in China include Haikou in South China’s Hainan province, Yinchuan in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Changde in Central China’s Hunan province, Changshu in East China’s Jiangsu province and Dongying in East China’s Shandong province.

“International Wetland City” is the highest honor a city can achieve in protecting wetlands. It’s a voluntary scheme launched in June 2017 by the Convention to improve cities’ awareness about wetland protection and reasonable use; and to advance the construction of a modern civilization in harmony with its ecological heritage in China.
