Xiamen sees prosperous opto-electronics industry

The opto-electronics industry in Xiamen generated 167.6 billion yuan ($24.25 billion) in 2017, up by 7.78 percent year-on-year, according to the forum on the development of opto-electronics industry in Fujian province held in the province's city of Xiamen on Oct 19.

Statistics from the forum shows that the total output of the industry in the city accounts for nearly half of that generated by the East China province, which reached 350 billion yuan in 2017.

The light-emitting diode (LED) sector in Xiamen generated 39.7 billion yuan in 2017, seeing a 23 percent increase and its LED epitaxial chip sector reaped in 14 billion yuan in the same year with an increase of 32 percent, ranking first in China.

Xiamen is now home to 280 opto-electronics companies, and breakthroughs have been made by opto-electronics talents in the city.

Professor Wei Zhanhua from local Huaqiao University improved perovskite LEDs' life span to 100 hours, setting a new world record in the area and Wei's paper was also published in the top science journal Nature.

Jin Zhangyu, chairman of Xiamen Opto-electronics and Semiconductor Industry Association, said at the seminar that the opto-electronics industry in Xiamen is now in a key development stage with its LED sector developing towards mini-LED, micro-LED and smart and healthy lighting.
