Two artworks of Pingtan shell carving are on display at the Fujian Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition, which got underway on Oct 1 at the Fujian Intangible Cultural Heritage Expo Garden.

The exhibition, which runs until Oct 28, showcases over 100 pieces of handicrafts, covering six types including stone carving, lacquer ware and shell carving, to promote Fujian traditional culture.

Pingtan, being an island city located off east coast of Fujian, has an abundance of shells.

The delicate technique of Pingtan shell carving was founded in 1955, focusing on both aesthetics and function.

"The debut will definitely contribute to Pingtan shell carving's application for becoming a provincial level intangible cultural heritage. We hope this technique can be showcased on the world stage," said Zhan Lixin, director of the Pingtan Shell Carving Institution.
